On a $15 gadget, Amazon’s fulfilment fee costs twice as much as making it. After that fee, the goods, duty, freight, the referral fee and advertising, about three dollars in ten are left, and that is a ceiling.
Two lines are measured: Amazon’s 15% referral fee and its pick-and-pack fee, read per listing. The crab spoon rest pays $4.35 to Amazon’s warehouses on a $12.95 August price, because the fee follows size and weight, not value. The goods are the weak part. Nobody quoted a cost. The table prices OTOTO’s custom shapes from commodity list prices on Made-in-China.com, plus an assumed premium for moulds and boxes, and several product types are placeholders. Each dollar of unit cost moves the twelve months’ profit by about $454,000 once duty is added.

List prices describe the category, not OTOTO’s supplier, and these are the company’s own shapes. August’s mix averages $1.99 a unit; the twelve months average $1.93. Doubling the unit cost takes the dossier’s twelve-month profit from $2.20M to $1.33M. Freight uses today’s container rate for every month, which overstates 2024–25.
One set of rates understates the rest of the year. August ended on sale prices, so Amazon’s fixed fee took a bigger share of each dollar than usual. The dossier’s month-by-month model uses each month’s own prices, duty and freight. It keeps 37% over the twelve months to August 2026, about $2.20M, where this chart’s August rates give about $1.86M.
Unit cost moves this profile most, and it is commodity list prices standing in for a quote on custom shapes. Advertising, part of freight and several duty classes are placeholders beside it. Those are the numbers to replace first.
