A little under half of a $110 average sale is left — and the line that decides it, what a set costs to make, is the one nobody has quoted.
Two products carry the costs. A set sells for $229 and a mat for $45, and in September the brand sold 550 sets and 1,000 mats. The set cost comes from Alibaba search results for the same 4-layer, 160-tile acrylic set; the product pages returned a CAPTCHA, so no price tier was ever read. The mat cost comes from a search result in the same way. Every $10 on the set cost moves September’s profit by about $6,600.
| Line | What was read | MOQ | Tier | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 160-tile 4-layer acrylic set | An Alibaba listing, from its search snippet — the page is behind a CAPTCHA | 1 set | Search snippet | $69–129 |
| Custom acrylic mahjong sets | Alibaba search results | 50 sets | Search snippet | $18–70 |
| Set cost used below | Inside the volume range — not a quote | — | Derived, weak | $45 / set |
| 3mm rubber mahjong mat | An Alibaba listing, from its search snippet — the page is behind a CAPTCHA | 1 mat | Derived, weak | $8.18 / mat |
| Tariff | 7.5% Section 301 List 4A plus a 12.5% China tier, from a secondary summary; China origin assumed | — | Derived | 20% of unit cost |
| Freight and inbound — a placeholder, not a quote | Ocean freight alone is about $0.30 a set on the FBX01 index | — | ASSUMED | $1.50 / unit |
| Mini sets and sound books | No basis at all; neither sold in September | — | ASSUMED | $30 / $4 |
Search snippets price the category, not this brand’s supplier. The $45 sits inside the volume range and is our choice, and the freight line is ours too — the two things to replace with a real quote first.
The shape is the reverse of a cheap product’s. On a $229 set Amazon’s fulfilment fee is under 4% of the price and the factory is the cost; on a $45 mat the fee is a quarter of the price. So the mix matters: a month heavy on mats keeps less of each dollar than a month heavy on sets.
The set cost is the weakest figure on this profile and the one that moves it most. It stands in for a quote nobody has read, with advertising and freight as placeholders beside it — the first three numbers to replace.
